This and That (part1)
December 30, 2011 09:49 PM PST
This mix contains a little bit of this and that, hence the title. Also, part 2 is forthcoming. I was only going to make one mix but I kept finding songs I liked and I eventually couldn't fit all of them onto one cd. Anyway... I hope you enjoy the first segment of This and That... Technologic -- Daft Punk

Here's a mix of slow jams I threw together today.... I usually have a story or explanation to go with my mixes but this one kind of speaks for itself. Anyway... hope you enjoy it : ) Trippin -- Total

I did this mix live as part of my set at Strip (Atlantic Station) on Saturday, April 9th. Dirt off Your Shoulder

I have been a working dj for about 2 years now... and I have always taken the process of building my skills very seriously. Lately however, I have been feeling frustrated and I had a little case of spinner's block (like writers block... but for djs). Upon reflection, I think I've just been going through some growing pains. Getting better requires elbow grease and I realized that I had to move beyond the fear of not being accepted and force myself to step outside of my comfort zone. Anyway... this mix is the product of my hard-work, tenacity, and creativity. Many loads of laundry and sinks full of dirty dishes were neglected while I stood for hours on end at my turntables practicing. That being said, enjoy : ) **this mix is dedicated to everyone at my gym (CrossFit East Decatur)... Coincidentally, I've had a lot of painful growth there too over the past several months.** Crazy... Gnarls Barkley

I made this house mix during the week Atlanta was held in the grips old man winter's icy hold. It has some of my current favorite house songs. I hope you enjoy it : ) We Have A Party...Arco

Mixed in Key is a dj software program and they have an annual contest to see who can create a 10-15 minute mix within their guidelines (http://contest.mixedinkey.com/). Here's the mix I submitted... one of the criterion is that it has to be all in one genre... I call the genre of this mix "Pop" ....but that's debatable... lol Play By Play...The ERAera

"I wasn't born this way. One creates oneself. I believe whatever I dream. Whatever I dream, I want to do." "I've always been a rebel. I never do things the way they're supposed to be done. Either I go in the opposite direction or I create a new direction for myself, regardless of what the rules are or what society says." "If you're out there you're vulnerable. People prefer to disappear in life, to repress their personality. That's not living. It's dying. I see them all over the place, the walking dead." - Grace Jones ------- Grace Jones was a controversial icon well before I was born in the late 70s. I remember the first time I witnessed her... it was in the movie Boomerang and I thought she was beyond fabulous. She was so bold, unafraid to express herself, unhindered when it came to demanding what she wanted, and unapologetic about who she was. Since Grace entered the scene, many female artists have attempted to reach her level of outrageousness. Madonna, Kelis, Rihanna, Lady Gaga and countless others have tried in their own ways to push the envelope... but compared to Ms. Jones, none are as audacious, original, bewildering, or strange'. So this mix is in honor of Grace, in honor of being yourself despite what others think, and in honor of living in the moment... I hope you enjoy it : ) Nightclubbing... Grace Jones

I have a confession. Since December of last year, I gained 20 pounds, busted a hole in the seat of a pair of jeans, and popped a button off another pair when out dancing. So last month I decided to join the East Decatur branch of CrossFit. For those of you who don't know, CrossFit isn't a regular gym... the formula at CrossFit is this: Heavy Weights + Running + "Guidance" + Sweat in your Eyes + (Torture x 2) + Peer Pressure = Results. The trainers are great and one in particular, Tommy, pushes me until I think I'm going to pass out, puke, or go on a cursing tirade. For some reason, he is under the impression that I can lift way more than is logically possible for me. Halfway into every workout, when I feel that I will drop a weight on my head, fall backwards, or be unable to finish, my pride kicks in, I get in the zone, and I do as Tommy tells me to do. Eventually, I start feeling fatigued and wonder if, at THIS very moment, all my muscles have given up and I am actually DYING. Then, like magic...the workout is over, people say "good job!" and I have a full 23 hours to recover before the next session. So while listening to this mix, go for a run when it's 100 degrees outside, do some burpee-pullup-crunch-squats, drag an enormous tire down the street while a dog chases you, then heave a slamball onto the ground and do a cartwheel before it bounces a second time... believe me... it's a lot of fun and, no, you probably won't die doing it... at least I haven't yet. ; ) Smells Like Teen Spirit... Nirvana

For those who don't know me personally, I am not just a dj. I am a brave, intelligent, and slightly insane middle school teacher. Last year when I taught 8th grade science, part of the curriculum required me to teach about light waves. When I taught them about the Sun and how life on Earth relies on the Sun's light energy, several children brought up the fact that sometime in the very distant future, our Sun will go supernova and engulf us. I bring this up to remind people that everything, evvvverrrrything, EV-ER-Y-THANG eventually ends. People, Events, institutions, nations, and even our precious Sun are temporary... In the past I have worried and tried to control situations only to realize my actions were futile. I finally realized that I am happiest when I enjoy life and accept each moment for what it is. No holding back, no regrets, no waiting for some "perfect" moment in the future... Now is all there is. So, here's a little sunshine... from me to you... enjoy ; ) Act Too (Love of My Life)... The Roots feat. Common

I wrote a really long explanation explaining my motivation for this mix... then I totally changed my mind about the genre and started over with different songs. Interestingly enough, the songs still seem to convey my mood... so take from it what you like... Music always speaks for itself... no extraneous words are necessary... enjoy ; ) Fall In Love.... Estelle feat. John Legend

I currently reside in Atlanta... and this summer, it has been HOT. It hasn't been the normal, humid, hotlanta heat... it has been so oppressively humid that it's a struggle to conjure basic thoughts. The only solution is to just surrender (preferably by a pool with the beverage of your choice). For some reason... all this heat has caused Reggae music to cycle through my mind.... So here's this week's mix... enjoy ; ) I Got A Feeling (Fendahead Reggae Remix)... Black Eyed Peas

I used to be a people pleaser. I would worry about fitting in, I would wonder if people liked me, I would attempt to conform to what was expected of me, and I would try oh so hard to please the special people in my life. I would wait on others for validation and would be so upset when the people I bent over backwards for didn't reciprocate. Slowly I began to realize that wasn't who I wanted to be.... where was the fun or comfort in being caught up in the non-ending cyclical game of expecting, wanting, and suffering? Happiness isn't external... pleasure, love, purpose, and peace come from the energy within... So in honor of me just doing me, this mix contains the most seemingly unrelated assortment of songs that I randomly encountered today... life is too short for conformity ; ) Confidential...Tearria Marie

Sometimes I don't want to get up in the morning. Okay, I lied, almost every day I repeatedly press snooze and dread having to get up out of my fabulously comfortable bed. One thing that helps me is music... So here are some of the songs that get me moving and motivated... enjoy ; ) Simon Says... Pharoahe Monch

I'm not sure why, but at almost EVERY gig someone hears a song, runs up to me and incredulously asks, "Whatchu know bout that?!" Apparently there are songs I'm not supposed to know about because of my gender or age or some other random reason. So this mix contains a little bit of what I know... enjoy... ; ) Searching.... Roy Ayers

It's summertime... the season for cookouts, family reunions, and get-togethers with friends. Regardless of the type of gathering, people drink, enjoy BBQ, sample the fruits of the season, and graze on specialty side items. One of those coveted dishes is potato salad... it has so many different ingredients that mesh together... and even though it seems like a simple dish; preparing it involves considerable skill. So, it is inevitable that the question: "who made the potato salad?" is asked at every event. I think that is very audacious... if you didn't make the potato salad or don't know how to make it, then you should just thank the fact that potato salad exists. And if the potato salad isn't so good... just remember that good potato salad is out there and you will be able to have some in the future.... That being said... DJ-ing is like making potato salad... so if you are wondering, who made THIS potato salad... I DID. There's lots of different ingredients, and it may not be perfect, but I put my foot in it. So don't ask questions... just enjoy. Let's Talk Money... PImp C ft T Pain
